Year 3

Thoughtfulness and Courage

Welcome to Year 3. This is the start of Key Stage 2 which is a big step up for your children from Key Stage 1 and we hope you will support us in making this transition as smooth as possible for your children.

A new experience for Year 3 children is to take part in swimming lessons and again your support is important in ensuring they come with the correct kit on swimming day. If you have any concerns about this or any other pastoral issues, please speak to the member of staff on door duty at the start of the day or class teachers at the end of the day.

Our aim is to provide a dynamic and imaginative curriculum to engage and encourage your children and we will keep you up-to-date on what we are doing during the year.

Year 3 work closely with Year 4 as Phase 2. We follow the same topic driven curriculum adopted for each year group. This provides a more cohesive experience for the children and allows us to draw on a wider staff specialist knowledge.

During this year your child will be taught by class teachers:

  • Miss Bond
  • Mr Walmsley/Mr Natynczuk
  • Miss Zaman

Supported by teaching assistants:

  • Mrs Benmoulai
  • Mrs Roberts
  • Mrs Matharu

In Year 3 the children go swimming during the Spring term. This takes place at Stechford Baths and is taught by the swimming instructors there. A second PE lesson each week takes place in school led by specialist sport coaches who deliver the lessons in line with the National Curriculum. 3P and 3Z have their lesson on Friday mornings. 3WS have their lesson on Tuesday mornings.

PE Times – Wednesday morning all three classes, 3B and 3Z Thursday afternoon, and 3W Monday morning.

Homework packs are sent out each half term. These should be completed and returned on the date specified on the pack at the end of the half term.

All children are expected to read at home and are provided with a reading bag, book and record book. A few minutes reading each night is ideal. Spellings are learned in ‘units’ following the 'Oxford Owls' scheme and a printed list is sent home to be learned each time a new unit is started. Also, the children are asked to be working on learning times tables; there is a weekly tables test and the children work towards this.

At the beginning of each new half term families are sent a ‘preview’ sheet which outlines the planned learning. Children are invited to carry out their own research, or respond creatively with writing of stories, poems, producing drawings, paintings, models or indeed anything about their learning which has captured their interest. We particularly value this ‘children led’ work from home.
